YOGA CHRISTMAS WORKOUT! (Yoga for everyBODY to praise God and celebrate the season)

We’re getting a work-out while getting our yoga praise on to the “Glory of God in the Highest” in this yoga segment!

We shall also pray for peace to fill our hearts, love to light our way and that we will pursue goodwill toward our fellow human beings, this Christmas and always!

As the angel of the Lord proclaimed to the shepherds that starry night,

Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luke 2:14

To begin, take a moment to clear your head by breathing slowly and deeply. Savor each life giving inhale. Let stress melt away with every exhale. Allow yourself to have peace, as God intended that you have.

Move slowly into each posture. Try to look up at the maximum point of your stretch. This will magnify your posture into praise, like an exclamation mark at the end of an exciting sentence (like this one)!

Designed for everyBODY, instructions are included with each posture below. An easier way of doing each pose is also included. The praise part of this segment is most important, so try to remember to look up in each posture!

I hope you will enjoy this segment of healthy yoga goodness as you celebrate this most wonderful time of year!

1.) Standing Cobra Forward Fold

With feet together and hands clasped behind you, inhale, raising your arms and eyes upward. Hold for a moment and get your praise on! Exhale, folding forward. Repeat this 5-10 times.

Bend your knees and widen the distance between your feet for better balance.

Place your hands on your hips if you cannot clasp them.

Try to look up!

2.) Warrior I Variation

Step out with your right foot. Place your hands in prayer position. Raise your right heel, and hold this position with 5 deep breaths while looking up. Then, lower your heel and raise your arms over head. Clasp your hands with your index fingers pointing up. Look up at the same time for 5 more deep breaths.

Step out farther for a more difficult stretch, and step in for more support and balance. Hold the posture. Look up. Breathe 5-10 deep breaths.

3.) Warrior III

Lift your back left leg. Stretch your arms out in front of you. Keep your hips and shoulders squared. Look up while breathing deeply 5-10 times.

If you fall over, try again! Maybe try lifting your leg a couple inches off your mat or bend your supported leg a bit. If necessary, keep your hands on your hips as you begin this posture or use a wall for support. Most importantly, remember at the top of your stretch to look up!

4.) Down Dog/Three Legged Dog

Place your hands on your mat from Warrior III position. You can also start this posture by moving into Down Dog from your hands and knees on the ground. Your deepest stretch will be when you can’t keep your heels on the ground. Try to look at your knees, but position your biceps at your ears. Hold the posture, breathing 5-10 deep breaths.

If you are able, lift your leg up behind you and hold the position.

Stay on your hands and knees if you find this position to difficult. You can also extend your leg to the back while on your hands and knees!

5.) Upward Dog

Slowly lower your torso from Upward Dog by curling your toes under you, dipping your head low, and pressing through your arms and up through your shoulders. Then, arch your head back, straighten your arms and look up! At this point your toes should be face down on your mat and your hands should be directly below your shoulders.

Repeat the transition from Downward Dog to Upward Dog a few more times. Inhale as you come to Upward Dog and exhale as you come to Down Dog. Look up with each arch back!

For an easier version lower your torso on the mat. Come up on your elbows, if possible, and arch your head back. Breathe and look up!

6.) Low Lunge Stretch Variation

Bring your right leg forward with bent knee. Lower your back leg onto your knee. Your hands should be directly on the mat below your shoulders. For a deeper stretch, extend your forward leg farther. Hold for a moment. Now, begin to sit on your back leg, keeping your forward leg straight. Lower your head to your knee. Repeat this process 3-5 times, inhaling as you lunge forward and exhaling as you sit back. On your fifth repetition, press your palms together and look up! Hold the posture for 10 full breaths.

For an easier version of the same exercise, try keeping your legs closer as you go forward and back. Just a bent knee with palms pressed together, a few breaths, and a look up will do!

7.) Supported Split

Repeat the Lunge Stretch variation again. This time, extend your legs wider for a deeper stretch. Breathe for 3-5 counts.  To try a Split, simply slide your forward leg forward. Keep your left hand on the mat for support and stretch your right arm up. Breathe and look up!

8.) Pigeon Pose

Bend your forward leg in. It is extremely important to keep your hips and shoulders squared. Use your arms to support you in this position. Breathe 5-10 deep breaths, looking up if possible!

As long as you do not experience pain, continue stretching as best as you can in this position. Keep your hips and shoulders squared. Don’t forget to breathe!

8.1) Pigeon Pose Variation

While keeping your hips and shoulders squared, try bending your back leg. If possible, grab your back leg with one or two hands. Breathe deeply for 5-10 counts while holding onto your back leg.

Lower your head to your mat with arms extended forward. Stay squared over your forward leg. Hold and breathe deeply, this time looking down! Do what you can do!

9.) Low Lunge Variation

Come up on bent knee. Extend your forward leg as far forward as you comfortably can. Clasp your hands behind you; breath and look up for 3-5 counts!

Release and open your arms wide as you inhale deeply. Exhale as you press your palms together in prayer position. Repeat the process for 5-10 counts looking up!

10.) Seated Forward Fold

Come to a seated position with legs extended straight out and forward. Inhale, stretching up with hands clasped and index fingers pointing up. Look up! Exhale, folding forward. Touch your head to your knees if you can. Repeat the process 5-10 times.

Bend your knees for a lighter version, still looking up and folding forward!

11.) Seated Prayer and Stretch

Sit cross legged. Extend straight arms slowly up from your sides with a deep slow inhale. Clasp your hands in prayer position above your head, looking up with a deep exhale!

Repeat the process 5-10 times, breathing and looking up!

Lie down on your mat and get ready for your other side.

Once you have completed numbers 1-11, it is time now to repeat numbers 1-11 with your left leg forward!

After you have completed each posture twice using each leg as the forward leg, your Halleluyah Christmas Yoga Segment is complete! Have a peaceful and most wonderful  Christmas…

…and yoga on!

THE PRAYING HALF MOON

A simple yoga pose can often lead us to incredible discoveries about ourselves. The Praying Half Moon Pose is no exception.  It looks me in the eye and says, “let go!” My body is always ready, but my mind gets in the way!

You know that deep silent part of you, the one no one knows exists with in you, the one that knows you were meant for more? That deep voice inside is hidden, and therefore quite easy to keep contained deep inside. But isn’t that what faith is all about? Leting that voice rise with in us, speak, and then act upon it?

Hebrews 11:1 tell us,

Faith is the confidence of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

So essentially, looking around here at things on earth keeps me bound to things I can see. Faith, which I cannot see, frees me from the things of the earth.  Listening to the unseen voice moves me from bounded to limitless! And then the story of Peter walking on the water comes to mind,

Lord, if it’s you, “Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” Come, “he said.” Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on water and came towards Jesus. But when he saw the wind he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out,” Lord save me!” Then Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. “you of little faith, “He said,” why did you doubt?”

Matthew 14: 28-31

Poor Peter. There he was feeling fine and divine until he looked around. One would think that Peter, being a disciple which experienced Jesus’ miracles and teachings, should have known he could walk on water if Jesus told him that he could. Instead, the story tell us Peter looked at what he could see – the storm. Then Peter, constrained by his thoughts, was bound to the earth and down he went.

Being in control and relying on what we can see, and avoiding risk, prevents us from true fulfillment. Perhaps even adventures beyond our wildest imaginations could happen if we simply let go of the shore. It’s no denying that Yoga poses can be pretty amazing to do and to see…

…but the most beautiful aspect of  life as in a yoga pose is …the letting go!

keep calm, let go, and yoga on

Try Praying Half Moon Pose. Use a sturdy chair at first to build leg strength. Then raise a leg, hop out of the boat and walk on water in your own life!

YOGA STRETCHES FOR BETTER GOLF SHOTS YOGA CHALLENGE (8 Yoga stretches with your irons to de-stress before you shoot)

Up your driving tee shot with these eight simple stretches, targeting your shoulders, arms, sides, hips, waist, abs, core and more! Breathe deeply as you stretch into each one.  It will relax your muscles and allow for a deeper stretch. Breathing deep and steady will also relax your mind, allowing clarity and focus as you warm up for that perfect first shot!

All of these stretches require your driver to accompany you! Remember to take each one slow and always remember to breathe! I know from experience that golf can be quite a mind game. Focusing all your attention on your breathing and these stretches instead of allowing yourself to tense up before that first shot can really do wonders to up your game!

1.) Driver Stretches

Take your driver and lay it on your shoulders behind your head. Relax your forearms upon it. Feel your shoulders and arms open up. Give yourself a few deep breaths in this position. It will relax your upper body and allow you to stretch even deeper.

2.) Driver Side Stretches

Let your driver slide down your left shoulder and arms. Follow the driver and stretch to your side. Hold the position  while breathing deeply again. Look up for a deeper stretch. Repeat the stretch on your right side. Do this on each side 4-5 times and don’t forget to breathe!

3.) Driver Twists

Hold onto your driver where it is a comfortable stretch for you. Your legs can be hip width apart or stretched a little farther to the sides, depending upon what feels good for you. Gently twist to the right, then gently twist to your left. Repeat the twist 5-10 times on each side.

4.) Driving Stretch and Lift

Take your driver and inhale deeply, stretching it over your head. Slowly lower it while exhaling. Lower and lift in the same manner up to 10 times.

5.) Driving Side Stretch

Take your driver, inhale deeply, and lift it up again. Exhale deeply as you stretch over your hips to the side. Repeat this by inhaling in the middle with the driver up over your head; then, exhale deeply as you stretch over to each side for a total of 5-10 times.

6.) Driving Forward Stretch

Stretch and lift your driver up once again while slowly inhaling. Slowly exhaling, gently bend forward. Lean only as far as you feel comfortable. You may bend your knees for added support and balance. Hold this position for a few breaths and lift back up to the starting position. Repeat for a few more stretches. Leading the stretch with your chin will increase the intensity of the entire exercise!

7.) Triangle Driving Stretch

Widen your stance about two and a half feet apart. Point your toes to the right side with your right foot. Slightly point your left foot in. Keep both heels on the same line. Lay your driver down for support. Hold it while leaning up and over to the side. Your face should be able to look forward. Slowly lower your hands until you feel a nice stretch. Hold this position with a few deep breath to relax and allow for a deeper stretch.

8.) Driving Warrior Stretch

From the same leg and foot positioning as the Driving Triangle Stretch, simply bend your forward knee. Step in for a less intense stretch. Then, take hold of your driver and slowly lift it up and over your back. Go slow and be gentle as you raise it over your head. If you find it a challenge at first, simply position your driver without raising it at first to gain familiarity with the stretch.

Look up and bend your forward leg a little more for a more intense stretch. Come out of the stretch and get back in it a few more times. Try to remember to breathe; it will help you release your muscles so you can stretch farther!

YOU ARE LOVED MINI YOGA CHALLENGE

It’s called, “Fierce Pose” in Sanskrit, “Chair Pose” in English and “Squatting” in Body Building. This pose gets its name because it’s based on where and how we perform it. Isn’t that kind of like love? We love one other based on “something” like emotions, feelings or desires.

Fortunately for us God is Love and the Creator of love. He loves with a pure and holy love that surpasses all human comprehension. Not only has He always loved each of us unconditionally, He also extends His love for each of us for all of eternity!

Give yourself a daily dose of Fierce Pose and based on nothing you can do or not do, be loved today, tomorrow and for all eternity!

God says,

I have loved you with an everlasting love.

Jeremiah 31:3

Don’t be afraid of it’s name. Fierce Pose is an approachable full body pose that builds leg strength, stabilizes your core, improves lung capacity, stretches your shoulders and opens your heart and back. Breathing deeply while holding this pose will help you enjoy its invigorating qualities. Below are four variations of a Fierce Pose. Enjoy the health benefits and know you are loved, as you practice this short but powerful yoga sequence!

1.) Fierce Pose

Stand tall with your feet together, back straight, shoulders pressed down, neck long, and face relaxed. With a deep inhale, slowly sit back like you are sitting on a chair. Lead with your sitting bones and raise your arms. Do not let your knees extend beyond your toes. Hold this position for 10-30 seconds while breathing deeply. Repeat this 5 times.

For an easier version, sit back just a little. Spread your feet apart for even more support.

2.) Praying Fierce Pose

Come back to a standing position. Sit back into Fierce Pose with a deep breath. This time, pressing your palms together in prayer position. Hold for another 10-30 seconds while breathing deeply. Extend your prayer pose to the floor by lowering your head and straightening your legs. Go to a standing position, then repeat the process 3 times more.

3.) Praying Fierce Pose Twist

Go to standing position – then, inhale and exhale, twisting to the right. The inhale lifts you up and provides room to twist, and the exhale lets you twist deeper. Your left elbow should extend beyond your right thigh. Press your palms together while trying to look up! Hold the position and breathe deeply for a few seconds, then repeat on your other side.

4.) One Legged Flying Fierce Pose

Stand tall. Place your left leg over your right thigh, inhaling deeply. Exhale, lean back, and lift your arms back behind you. A longer exhale allows for a deeper stretch. Hold the position for 10-30 breaths. Repeat with your left leg on the ground.

…always remember that somebody loves you at this moment and every moment in the future. No conditions necessary!

STRETCHING YOGA CHALLENGE

Join me in this quick stretch to loosen up your tense muscles and get a new perspective on stretching!

If we are willing, we can stretch ourselves to achieve great things – but God has better for every one of us!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Luke 1:37

Do you remember? Peter walked on water. Sarah gave birth at age 90. Mary was a mother with out knowing a man. Jesus’ disciples fed over 5,000 people from one kid’s lunch. Moses parted the entire Red Sea for the Israelites to cross. Little boy David killed an armored giant with a stone. Daniel a slept all night in a den of lions. Deborah saved a nation. The list goes on!

Though the people of the Bible were just normal people, they did amazing things! But they had one thing in common: they were stretched! Day by day, year by year, little by little, God stretched their faith. At the point when they were fully able to rely on Him, God blessed them; they accomplished above and beyond what they could possibly imagine!

Now is your opportunity to go deeper in your yoga practice with these Asanas below. Remember to breathe deeply, this will relieve stress and tension, allowing you to stretch deeper. I know God is stretching me – where might God be stretching you?

1.) Standing Stretch

Start by standing tall with your abs pulled in, your butt tucked under, your chest lifted, your shoulders down and your neck lengthened. Lift your arms to the sides, inhale deeply, and stretch them up. Exhale deeply and lower your arms. Repeat 5-10 times, depending on how much time you have.

2.) Forward Bend

In this stance, when you exhale down, extend your torso over your legs. Whereever your hands land on your legs is the perfect place for you. Once you feel comfortable in the Forward Bending stretch, put your left hand near, in front of, or touching your right foot. Stretch your right arm up and gently twist. Repeat on your other side. Stretch each side 5-10 times.

To make it slightly easier, bend your knees. You can also play around with your legs by bending each one separately.

Do number 3-8 with your right leg forward. Then do number 3-8 with your left leg forward.

3.) Intense Pose Reverse Praying Hands

Extend your right leg to the side with your toes pointed. Slightly turn in your left toes. Press your palms behind your back in a praying positio,n lifting the palms as high up your back as you can go. Stretch your entire torso back with a deep inhale. With a deep long exhale, extend your torso out and over your front leg. Lead with your chin. Stretch as far as you can go in this position.

You can always step your back leg in to make it easier, or slightly bend both legs. You can also place your hands on your hips, or clasp your wrists in back instead of the reverse prayer hold.

4.) Intense Pose Stretch

Once you can no longer hold the Reverse Prayer Position, release you hands and stretch deeper over your leg. Try to get your head to touch your knee and breathe deeply, for up to 10 counts.

Step your back leg in for less intensity and slightly lean forward to make this pose less challenging.

5.) Deep Lunge Pose

Bend your right knee. Place your hands on your mat on each side of your foot. Step your back leg in for less intensity, or place your knee on your mat. Breathe deeply for up to 10 counts.

You can always bend your back leg for less intensity or place your hands on your thigh.

6.) Lunge Pose Twist

Raise your right arm and look up. Stretch that body. Hold for 5-10 deep breaths.

Bend your back knee if it becomes too challenging.

7.) Deep Lunge Stretch

Drop your back knee to the mat. Stay here and breathe deeply for up to 10 counts. If you can, grasp your foot; stretch and hold this position for 5-10 breaths.

Take it farther by lifting your forward arm up and pulling your foot to meet your sitting bones. Breath 10 long and deep breaths again!

8.) Bended Knee Prayer Position

Place both your hands on each side of your foot and slide your knee below your sitting bones to come out of the intense stretch. Then bring your palms together. You are ready to pray!

Sit and breathe for a few moments. Enjoy the rewards that any kind of stretching can bring!

Let me know how it goes…

WARRIOR POSE (Slay your hunched over shoulders)

Got a few moments? Can you join me for 5 minutes of Warrior training to counter the effects of sitting at a desk all day? We will stretch and strengthen our entire body with the all-inclusive ” Warrior Pose.” With a simple clasping of hands behind our backs, we optimize the pose by opening our hearts, chest, and lungs, reversing the hunched back posture.  Add a bow forward, and we up our training by causing our core to kick in to help keep our body up!

1.) Warrior Pose

Step to the side. Keep your heels on the same line and your back toes slightly turned in. Your hips should face forward. Step in with your back leg if the pose grows challenging. Bend your right knee. Place your hands in a praying position. Breathe deeply through your nose for 5-10 counts. Surrender your thoughts and be present for these few moments.

Your inhales should be long and deep through your nose as you go back. Your exhales should be long and slow as you bow. Hold the breath in at the top of the stretch. Hold your breath out at the bottom of the bow. This will enhance the effects of the pose.

Just a quick reminder to all the warriors out there….

Stand tall and be proud that you are a warrior in God’s army, for He thinks you are a mighty warrior! He says it many times in His word. Below is just one example. Best part? You already “own” the victory, when you placed your life in God’s hands!

The Lord is with you mighty warrior.

Judges 6:12

2.) Peaceful Warrior Pose

Clasp your hands behind your back. Look up. Inhale deeply and hold it.

3.) Humble Warrior Pose

Keep tension in the clasping. Bow forward. Lead with your chin. Exhale slowly. Extend up and over your forward leg. Hold the bow and the exhale.

Inhale and slowly come up back to Peaceful Warrior Pose. Repeat the process 5-10 times and try it with your left leg forward.

With God at your side you can do mighty things.

Be the Warrior He created you to be!

YOGA FOR PRAISING GOD CHALLENGE (Basic yoga postures that praise God)

Halleluyah is the Hebrew word for ‘Praise the Lord.” Asana is the Sanskrit word for “posture” or “pose”. And this Yoga Segment is the Praise the Lord Poses Segment!

Offer up praise to God in each Asana and watch Him bless your workout, fashioning it into an inner and outer total body workout! Emerge with joy in your heart, love in your soul and a peace that passes all understanding!

In these postures, you will challenge every muscle. Breathing deeply and steadily will enhance your efforts and soak up all the health benefits. Being attentive in each movement will give you the opportunity to feel how magnificently your body was made. Let God love you with a Heavenly love as you meditate upon these incredible Bible verses!

But God demonstrated His love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.

1 John 3:16

Before you begin, take a few moments to quiet your mind and body by inhaling and exhaling long and deeply. Accept and believe that God loves you so much that He died in your place. As you position into each Asana, or when your palms meet, pause and offer up your Halleluyah’s!

1.) Seated Side Stretch:

Come in a cross-legged position or whatever is a comfortable position for you! Take a deep breath while raising your arms up from your sides into a praying position and pause. Exhale deeply, leaning to the left side. Try to place your forearm on the mat and really stretch your other arm over. Pause at the end of your exhale. Bring your arms up with a big inhale again. Pause and exhale over to your right side. Repeat for 5-10 times each side.

2.) Reverse Forward Bend:

From a cross-legged position, gently come to all fours. Place all your weight upon your feet. Tuck your hands under your toes and give yourself a deep stretch. From here, slowly rise, one vertabre at a time with your head and arms coming up together with a big inhale. Your hands should meet in a prayer position. Try to gaze upward and pause before releasing back down. Repeat this 3-10 times.

Maybe your hands just don’t go under your toes. Maybe your ankles, calves or knees are a better place for you. Simply do Reverse Forward Bend from your starting point. Always modify any position that challenges you, or you do not feel comfortable doing.

3.) Star Asana and Twist Stretch:

With your legs stretched out wide to the sides, inhale deeply, slowly lifting your arms straight up from your sides. Pause when your palms meet. Exhale and slowly release your arms. Let your right hand touch your left foot and stretch. Inhale it all back up and exhale over to your right leg with your left hand. Repeat, alternating sides, for 5 -10 counts each side.

Maybe your hands don’t make it into a praying position. Just lift them up then. Or maybe your legs will not extend to the sides comfortably. Walk them in a little, or more if you must. Always make it safe for your body by doing only what feels comfortable for you!

4.) Warrior II Asana:

This time we will be doing the same Star Asana to begin, and then stretch into Warrior II from there. So, with feet extended out to the sides, inhale deeply as you also extend your arms out to the sides. Lift your arms up into a praying position. Pause. Then slowly release into Warrior II by lowering your arms to shoulder height while pointing your right foot toes to the right side; bend that knee. Exhale slowly as you release.

Pause for a moment in Warrior II Asana. Pressing your palms together, take another big inhale and exhale in prayer position, pausing again.

Now, take another deep inhale, raising your praying palms while your legs straighten. Your feet face forward while your head gazes upwards. Pause. Then lower to Warrior II position again, and repeat the same process. Do this on each side 5 times.

Again, do each pose the way that feels good for your body. Your hands do not have to meet in prayer pose and your legs can be bent and not so wide. Do try to breathe deeply though!

5.) Intense Stretch Prayer Asana into Triangle Asana:

Come back to your comfortable Star Asana. Gently meet your fingers behind your back. Lift your hands up, following your spine and press your palms together into a Prayer Asana behind your back. Now, rotate your right foot to the right while your left foot rotates slightly. Each of your heels should be on a straight line if possible. Your legs should be straight as well. Take a few good deep breaths, then pause. Release your hands and straighten your arms with your right hand on your mat and your left hand up. Pause and take a few good deep breaths again. Come back to your Star Asana. Repeat with your left leg forward. Do this on each side 1-3 times.

If you find your fingers do not meet behind your back, place your hands wide with palms up on your lower back or hips. Or place them where they feel comfortable behind your back. You may even press your palms into Prayer Asana in the front of your body. You may also need to bend your legs a little and place your hands on your hips or thighs, calves, or ankles to begin, and progress from there.

6.) Praying Lunge Asana:

Turn to your right side with your right foot forward. Bend your legs and place your left knee on your mat. Inhale deeply and stretch your arms up from the sides. Pause. Exhale deeply into a prayer asana. Pause. Repeat on the same leg 3-5 times. Then do it with your left leg forward.

For a deeper lunge, if you are able from the above asana, step your forward leg out about 3-6 inches. Move slowly and stretch into a deeper lunge by stretching your back leg out. With a deep inhale, lift your arms up from your sides. If you are able, press your palms together. I find I can stretch my arms up higher by interlacing my fingers. Pointer fingers are kept straight. Look up. Pause. Exhale, releasing your arms down. Press your palms into prayer asana. Repeat the process of inhaling up, pausing, then exhaling down and pausing, 3-5 times with each leg forward. Always be in Prayer Asana during the pauses if you can!

7.) Praying Chair Asana With Twist:

With feet no wider than hip width, sit back as if you were going to sit in a chair. Lead with your sitting bones, inhaling deeply while lifting your arms out from the sides. Pause. With a big exhale, lower your arms and press your palms together into prayer asana. Inhale deeply, making space in your body for the incoming twist. Then exhale, twisting the prayer asana to the left side. Try to get your opposite elbow to the outside of your opposite leg. Pause. Inhale, going back to the middle with arms up. Exhale and twist to your other side. Alternate each side with an inhale arms up in the middle and an exhale hands pressed in Prayer Asana on each side. Repeat each side 5-10 times.

You may find your thighs muscles burning if you’re sitting too low. You may always stand up in the middle and bend into Chair Asana with each twist. Let your Prayer Asana fall where it may. With consistent practice, you will sit lower and twist more.

8.) Knee Hug into Hand/Toe Asana:

For additional benefits, pull your knees into your chest before getting into Hand/Toe Asana. Breath deeply for 10 counts with each knee pulled in.

After you have completed Knee Hug, take your right foot and straighten it out to the side. Hold and pause with continuous breathing up to 10 counts. Repeat with your left leg. Alternate each leg for a total of 3-5 times. Include the Knee Hug before each Hand/Toe if you like. Also, you may uses a sturdy chair, wall or countertop for support as you learn this asana.

9.) Knee Hug into Warrior III Asana:

Again, for additional benefits pull your knee into your chest before each Warrior III Asana. Hold for 10 counts of deep breathing!

After your last inhale, pause, and then exhale while releasing the Knee Hug.  Let your leg straighten as it moves behind you. Try not to lower it to the mat. Try to keep your leg lifted behind you. Try to also keep your front body, torso and hips facing your mat. Breathe deeply for 5-10 counts. At this point, you may go back to a knee hug and do a few more Warrior III Asanas. Bring your right knee into a Knee Hug and do the sequence with your other leg.

You may also use a chair, table or wall for support. Don’t forget to breathe too!

10.) The King’s Asana:

Grab your knee again and give it a hug! Once you have held it for 10 counts of deep breathing, slowly move your hand to your foot as you move your leg behind you. I find holding my ankle really stretches me and provides support as I lean forward with my torso. Slightly bend your standing leg and don’t be afraid to lean forward. Just let go of your leg if you are on the verge of falling. If you can, hold The King’s Asana with continuous breathing as long as you can. Offer up your Halleluyah’s!

Use support for your forward arm. Don’t lean if you don’t need to do so; stand tall and build leg strength while standing on one leg. Try the pose and fall a few times. It’s a learning process. Do whatever suits you. There is no wrong way. Enjoy, have fun and praise God while you do!

…and that’s how you Halleluyah your Asanas!

Blessings!

2 Samuel 22:33

1.) Standing Squat Crunch

Stand with your feet hip width apart. With hands behind your head, inhale and squat back. Squat like you are sitting back into a chair, leading with your bottom. Then, explode up while exhaling, lifting your knee to touch your elbow. Alternate sides and do this 10-25 times on each side. Ultimately, you want to increase the count up to 50 times each side when you feel able.

2.) Warrior I Push Outs

With hands in fists, pull your elbows back as you deeply inhale. Do this while stepping with left foot out to your left side into Warrior I position with straight legs. When you are ready to exhale, bend your forward left leg. Do this while opening up your palms and pushing forward with resistance. Go slow. Let the heel of your palm lead the push; try to really resist for building hand, wrist, and arm strength. Exhale strongly as you resist. Release the last bit of oxygen out of your lungs. Do this on each side 5-10 times. For more intensity, widen your legs in Warrior I. For less intensity, bring your legs closer together.

3.) Exploding Squat Side Punch

Inhale quickly, squatting back with fists blocking your face. Lead with your bottom to torch those lower body muscles. Exhale quickly, exploding up while punching out to your side with your right fist. Repeat this 10-25 times on each side. The goal is to do this 50 times each side; work up to it! Squat back lower for more intensity, and do more repetitions on each side. Slightly squat back slowly with less repetitions.

4.) Knee Hug into Warrior III

Stand tall. Inhale deeply, lifting your right knee and pulling it into your chest. Raise your opposite hand for more intensity. Exhale deeply, releasing your knee and slowly letting your fingers find the mat for support. Stretch your leg up behind you. Inhale again, hugging your knee in and slowly standing up again on your left leg. Repeat this 10 times on each leg. For more intensity, go slow and do more repetitions. For less intensity, use a chair, table or counter top for support. Reduce the number of repetitions to what you’re comfortable doing.

5.) Half Moon Pose

Gently take off into Half Moon Position from Triangle Pose. Your left leg toes should point forward, with your left hand about 12 inches out in front of you. Raise your right hand and let your right heel push out through your right leg. This positioning will help keep you balanced. Stretch and breathe. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute for more intensity, and the place the hand that is touching your mat on your ankle. For less intensity, use a wall, sturdy chair or counter for support. If you fall, simply get up and try again. Hold Half Moon pose for 10-30 counts. Repeat on your other leg.

When you feel comfortable grab your foot and stretch some more! You can always do each leg again a few more times, should you feel ready.

6.) One Legged Chair Squats

Place your left foot on your right thigh and squat back, leading with your bottom. Do not allow your standing knee to bend beyond your toes. Hold for 10 long breaths and repeat on your other leg. For more intensity, inhale as you straighten your standing leg and exhale as you bend into squat, for a total of 5-20 times on each leg. You can go low in the squat and do more repetitions for added intensity. Use a chair, table or counter top for support if you need to and do less reps for less intensity.

7.) Eagle Pose

Stand tall. Picking up your left leg, place it over your right thigh, and then place it behind your right leg. Let your left leg twirl around your standing leg until your toes pop out on the left side of your leg. Or, you can simply keep your toes behind your leg. Try to keep your hips forward. Your left arm should then slide under your right arm and also twirls up the arm. Ultimately, both palms should look at one another when you get into this position. If you find that your body does not move that way yet, simply relax and ease into the space that feels right for you today. Wherever you find yourself is a great place to start today. Now repeat everything on your other leg and arm. Your right leg goes over left thigh, and right arm slides below and up left arm.

Enjoy! Have fun…and be blessed!

YOGA FOR VITALITY CHALLENGE ( Yoga with a twist for everyBODY)

This yoga segment is designed for most fitness levels.  Enhance your twisting with a couple verses of Scripture provided below and twist for your mind, body, and soul!

Get Twisted and improve the health of your internal organs and build your core. According to Livestrong, twists encourage the flow of oxygenated blood while eliminating toxins and metabolic wastes from your body. They also aid in bloating or digestive problems. Your shoulders, chest, back and spine have a chance to relax in twists and you will increase flexibility in your spine and waist muscles.

At first glance, twists appear chaotic. Any normal person knows a body should not be bending and twisting like that. That’s the beauty of a twist: a body gone wild! Don’t be fooled; to move into a twist from a standing position requires so much more. Your feet need to settle into the earth and your legs must draw strength from the stability of the feet. Your entire core or inner body  needs to lengthen. You must inhale from the bottom of your body to the top of your head, drawing a long deep breath by pulling up and out of your waist, chest, hips, spine. And when it is impossible to hold any more breath inside you, then you twist with a long exhalation. The breathing helps you twist better.

What I love about twists is that your insides get revitalized. As you stand firm with a solid foundation, you appear all tensed up and out of control but your core keeps you strong. Sometimes in our lives we get all twisted up too but God tells us to chill. Sometimes the knots are so twisted up we can easily forget that the God that breathed the stars into existence and turned water into wine can help us. Seriously, all we need to do is believe. Seems too easy, but God promised He would help us. In this yoga segment get twisted but let Him untwists all the  knots inside that are binding you now.

…”cast your worries on Him, because He cares for you. 1 peter 5:7

…Let your roots grow down into Him. Let your lives be built on Him. Colossians 2:7

1.) Chair Pose into Chair Pose Twist

Start by placing your feet together. Bend your knees and slightly bend back as if you were going to sit on a chair. Raise your arms up, then inhale and exhale 3-5 times long and deeply. You may stand up for a moment or continue in a chair pose for the twist.

In chair pose position, on your last inhale and exhale bring your palms together in prayer pose. Firmly press them together. Inhale deeply, lifting your entire upper body. Exhale deeply as you twist. Let your left elbow twist to the outside of your right leg. Hold the pose as long as you like or repeat on your other side.

Make it a flowing sequence of movement by always standing up before you bend into chair pose. Bend into chair pose with arms up and then into prayer pose. Stand up again and bend into chair pose before you twist to each side. Repeat the sequence once or maybe 3 times each side.

You may also widen your feet for better balance in chair pose and do not bend back too far. Always stand between each movement so your legs don’t get tired and slightly twist to each side.

2.) Chair Pose One Arm Stretch and Twist

From chair pose, twist to the right side, and simply lower your left arm down while extending your right arm upward. Hold the twisted stretch, then inhale and exhale long and deeply. Breathe into any tensions that may arise.

3.) Low Lunge Back Knee Bend into Reverse Twist

Step your left foot forward into a lunge pose. Sink your hips, placing your back knee on the ground. Inhale and exhale long and deeply for a minute, invigorating your body and mind while resting your attention on God.

For the twist, bend your right back leg and let your torso follow. Place your right hand directly below your right shoulder. Let your left arm twist your body as you look up. Inhale and exhale long and deeply for 3-10 counts if you like, or what ever feels good for you.

Make you lunge higher or simply stay on a bended back right knee if you find it too challenging. If your right hand does not make it to the floor, stay up. Do the twist by placing your right arm just outside your left thigh. Inhale and exhale long and deeply as long as you feel comfortable.

4.) Bended Knee Reverse Twist and Stretch

Step your right foot forward, bending your back left knee. Inhale long and deeply, lifting your entire upper body. Then as you exhale twist, placing your left hand on your right thigh. Raise your right arm for a deeper twist. Repeat on your other side for 3-10 long and deep twisted inhales and exhales, or as many as you like.

5.) Warrior II Pose into Side Angle Pose

Step your left foot forward, bending your knee. Keep your left back leg straight if possible. Sink your hips, raising your arms up and out to the sides. Inhale, pulling up and out of your belly, then lifting your chest. Keep your shoulders pressed down with an extended neck. Look out past your arms. Stand firm and let the quietness of your roots be the source of your strength.

Move from Warrior II position into Side Angle pose by lifting your right arm up and extending it up and over. Meanwhile bend your left arm, resting it on your left thigh. Stretch and inhale and exhale long and deeply 3-10 times. Repeat on your other side.

Walk your back leg in and slightly bend your front knee if you find it too challenging. Your hand may also rest anywhere that feels comfortable on your front leg.

6.) Side Angle Stretch and Twist

Once in a Side Angle position, lower your forward left hand to the floor and extend your right arm up. Inhale and exhale long and deeply 3-10 times.

You may come back to a standing position or come back to a Side Angle. Moving from a Side Angle, simply let your raised right arm fall behind. Then let your left arm slide under your left thigh and meet it. Grasp your fingers and look up. This will open your torso in new ways, stretching and strengthening your entire body. Inhale and exhale as best you can long and deeply.

Bring your right arm to your hip. Look up.

7.) Star Pose One Arm Stretch and Twist

Stretch your legs out to the sides at a distance comfortable for you. Bend forward, placing your hands on the ground. Inhale long and deeply and exhale long and deeply, extending and twisting your right arm upward. Repeat on the other side for 3-10 inhales and exhales on both sides. Inhale middle, exhale twisting up.

For a less vigorous approach, bend your knees and  lessen the distance between your legs. Bend over slightly. Let your twist come from placing your hands on the outside of each leg. The other arm can be placed on your hip. Inhale in the middle slightly bent and exhale as you twist to each side. Repeat 3-10 times each side.

dscn3271

8.) Eagle Pose

Stand with your legs and feet together. Raise your left leg, placing it over your right thigh. Try to tuck that leg behind the leg your standing on. If you can twirl it around the leg finishing at the inside of your right foot. Once steady, let your left arm go under your right elbow, twirling it up your arm until your palms meet. Inhale and exhale long and deep 2-4 times. Repeat on your other leg. Left leg twirls left arm goes under and twirls. Right leg twirls, right arm goes under and twirls. Try to keep your body, especially your hips facing forward.

For a less vigorous approach, I would suggest that you do these movements separately. Arms. Then do legs. Play around with each, and see where you end up. One side will feel easier, guaranteed!

9.) Squat Prayer Pose Into Side Twist

Let your legs be hip width apart then bend your knees. Sink your hips all the way to the ground. Press your palms together for a more intense stretch.

From Squat Pose, raise your left arm up then back extending it to your right hip. Stay here. For a more intense stretch, take your right arm out and over the outside of your right leg. Meet the hands, clasp them and stretch upward for 3-10 long and deep inhales and exhales.

For a less vigorous approach, place a rolled up or folded blanket under each heel. Gently begin moving your arms up and around your legs. Stop at a comfortable stretch for you. Inhale and exhale long and deeply.

Lie on your back for a few breaths to absorb the afterimage of each twist. Do you feel lighter? Does your body feel more buoyant? Do you feel more rooted and grounded, perhaps balanced and clear-headed? Enjoy this delightful state of peace and love.
